Under the influence of the evil Lord of Time, the King of Larme offers his crown and daughter to whomever can answer a riddle, pass through an ordeal that harms all who attempt it, and finally tell a joke that will make the princess laugh. A mountain farmer's three sons take the test. Warrior Gryn journeys to the past; the thinker Blon goes into the future; and the youngest, a magician, penetrates the present.

Poet and comedian Robert MacLean was born in Toronto, taught film at Canadian universities until he could no longer stand the cold and now lives in Greece. He publishes novels and stories and does readings in Europe and America. His funeral parlor farce Mortal Coil was performed at the Manitoba Theatre Centre (the novel's on his website), and in July his one-act Steel Man was mounted off Broadway at John Houseman's Studio Theatre. Robert has just finished a five-minute filmette, The Moment of Accepting Life.
